Description
Violet Queen Tree Collard is a new tree collard developed by Project Tree Collard for 2024. This tree collard is upright in habit and regal in the home garden with its gorgeous purple stems. The coloration is similar to Purple Tree Collards but the leaves are less purple. It reaches 2-3 feet wide and 5-6 feet tall in 3 years. Our plants have grown 3 feet in one year. Plants can be easily kept to 3 or 4 feet in height by tip pruning.
Violet Queen Tree Collard seems to be less prone to insect attacks than other tree collard varieties. It is also shy to bloom in the spring, which makes it one of the most productive tree collards available. Violet Queen has endured 2 feet of snow and hot dry summers alike. It has done well without fertilizer of any kind.
Violet Queen Tree Collards are perennial in zones 8-11, and probably marginal in zones 7 A and 7B. It has thrived in Grass Valley, CA where it snows lightly in winter and gets up to 115 degrees in July and August.
